My Barrio: Learn Spanish

My Barrio teaches Spanish the way you would actually pick it up living in Barcelona: by needing it. You stand behind a market stall and customers come in speaking Spanish. An old lady asks for dos manzanas rojas. A kid wants tres huevos. You just hand them the right thing. Understanding the sentence is not a test that interrupts the game, it IS the game. There is no multiple choice, no fill in the blank, no red cross. Get it wrong and the customer simply repeats it slower and points, which is exactly how a real person would help you. While you work, the scene drifts gently across the world around you and small bubbles name it as it passes: el toldo, la bascula, el reloj, la cesta. You are not studying them, you are just there. Underneath, an invisible spaced repetition engine decides which words the next customer will ask for, so the drilling that language apps put in a separate review session is hidden inside the level generator instead. A word can only gain one step of strength per shift, so mastery is spread over days rather than crammed into one session. Words you know lose their translation on their own, then lose their label entirely, and the orders speed up and turn colloquial. Masculine words are always outlined blue and feminine words coral, everywhere, so el and la stop being a rule you memorise and become something you feel. Every so often the roles flip and you become the customer, building your own Spanish sentence from word tiles. Twenty places are open from the start and you pick where to work: the market, cafe, bakery, kitchen, living room, clothes shop, street, metro, restaurant, supermarket, pharmacy, bank, dining room, square, school, office, park, beach, party and airport, for around 435 words in total. Each one shows how many of its words you have met, so you can see what is left rather than being made to earn your way in. At the pharmacy the customer tells you what hurts and you point at it on their own body, which is how the words for head, eye, ear, shoulder, arm and hand get learned. Each place adds a layer of grammar rather than just more nouns. In the kitchen the order arrives as a command, so you learn everyday verbs by carrying them out: lava el plato, corta el pan, dame el huevo. In the living room somebody tells you where a thing is and you touch that spot in the room itself, which is how encima de, debajo de, a la izquierda de and a la derecha de get learned without a grammar table. The clothes shop introduces the nouns Spanish only has in the plural, las gafas and los pantalones, with the article always agreeing. Every word can be tapped to hear it in Spanish, with the voice matched to the customer speaking.
